NASSIT Investment
Board members of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) which Sierra Express spoke to on the state of investment undertaken by the Trust, have been able to say that the inevitable success of all NASSIT investment is underplayed by the sincerity of both the management team and the board to ensure that monies of the people entrusted unto the Trust are used judiciously and in pubic interest.
Talking about the investment made by the board in the purchase of two ferry boats to help in riverine transportation, Sierra Express was told that the Trust in a frantic bid to rescue the sickening sea shuttle from the capital of the country Freetown to the first port of call in the country – the Lungi International airport, the board, after executive consultation reached the purchase of two ferries.
The Director of Public Affairs Mr. Peter Kenna however said that because the Trust hadn’t much funds to go for new vessels, it was decided by board members with representatives from the contributor, civil society and government that second hand boats were to be purchased, using the services of professional brokers as per the provision of the country’s procurement laws. The Director stated that the Trust knew that the ferries were not new and that there were bound to be some sorting and mending, which he noted was clearly made known to the public and relevant stakeholders.
Whilst this was the case the director said, mending the few problems the ferries had was not anticipated to last up to now; noting however that all such problems have been fixed plus – giving the ferries a new life-span that is expected to last up to 10 years with the new engines that have been fitted to able to serve the need of the people for long time.
Meanwhile, Management of the Trust have also brought out for the attention of both the media and general public that all other investments undertaken by the Trust are so far going according to plan, adding that even with the ferries it is only a small hitch which the institution is catching up with and will be ready for use soonest.
Reasoning with the general public and the media in the massive interfacing programmes undertaken by the Trust, the Public Affairs Chief said “you cannot brand an institution of such mammoth repute and success in its undertakings and dispensation as failing the people when in actual fact it is tirelessly and judiciously working for the benefit of the peopleâ€. He further noted that the Trust’s aim of rescuing the riverine transportation need of the people of Sierra Leone is still very much alive and could be the only meaningful solution to the still apparently perennial problem facing the Freetown-Lungi shuttle in particular as up to now no better intervention has been made to solve the problem but that NASSIT will surely settle once and for all.
He mentioned other thriving investments like the Kimbima Hotel, HFC Mortgage and Housing Scheme, the Lion heart Foundation Bio Fuel Programme and the Regimanuel Gray housing scheme that are all doing very well and generating income for both pensioners and the development of the country as whole.
Other potential areas of investment to be undertaken by the Trust Sierra Express has learnt is the building of low cost and affordable housing.   Â
