Welcoming our new freedom!
The curtailment of our fundamental democratic rights guaranteed by the constitution in the guise of fighting an apparently exaggerated pandemic in our country was long overdue. Successive curfews preceded by an illegal state of public health emergency imposed for twelve months had been taking its undue toll on the populace, with grave social, economic and political ramifications.
We are not in any way disputing the position of Government and the World Health Organization (WHO) that COVID exists for real; and yet, its real existence in our country can be doubted, based on the validity of tested relationships.
We are proud that Government was able or rather purportedly able to proactively contain the deadly virus from easily entering the country at the initial stages of the outbreak, making Sierra Leone the last destination of the disease in the sub-region.
We also laud the stringent measures taken by Government and of course the people, whose rights and freedoms were put on the altar of sacrifice in the fight against the pandemic.
We also note with great gratitude, the meaningful contribution of our international development partners for spending their tax payers’ monies to salvage our dire situation, although much of it would have found its way down the throat of some greedy and unscrupulous Government officials.
On 13th September, 2021, HE the President, magnanimously lifted the biting curfew following an impressive low in recorded cases. We welcome this new lease of life in the socio-economic fabric of our nation.
Generally, the public, especially the downtrodden, breathe a sigh of relief from a long period of being deprived from their livelihoods and freedoms while the bureaucrats had been going about their business normally unhindered.
We particularly welcome the resumption of praise and worship which strengthens our relationship with our maker and owner of the universe. We fervently hope that there is not going to be a reversal to our newfound life of “unrestricted” freedom!
