Cowards die many times before their death
Scriptures in the Bible and the Quran speak against the spirit of fear, as a source of self-defeat that militates against progress and self-accomplishment.
In Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart” Okonkwo killed Ikemefuna, a lad who calls him Father, disregarding the counsel of his close friend, Obierika, because he did not want to be thought of being a coward.
Many of us fear putting ourselves out there because it might not work out or afraid of what people might say against us. One should note that people always have something to say about you no matter how perfect you try to be in life. Also have it in mind that there’s no perfection in humanity and everyone has a skeleton in their various cupboards no matter how small they might be. Therefore, don’t let others determine your life while you’re still alive.
Furthermore, don’t be ashamed of your past record, whether good or bad for that shouldn’t be used as yardstick to determine your future. They’ll leave no stone unturned in trying to blackmail you in an effort to pull you down to the gutters.
Sierra Leone as a country has lost many good public figures because of fear of what others might say about them. They’ll call you all sorts of names. Don’t let your past hold you hostage in your small corner. The past with all its imperfections never lacks dignity. Cowards die many times before their death.
But it’s important to remember that fear is usually worse than any hurt you might experience.
We can handle suffering and people’s criticisms, but when we are afraid we tend to underestimate our own strength.
Sometimes, we may not even experience this suffering and disappointment we are afraid of after all, but we won’t know until we muster the courage to go for what we want.
