The killing and arson in Kono, Sierra Leone

On 20th April 2021, the people of Koidu City in the diamondiferous eastern district of Kono were rudely reminded of the bitter memories of the ten years of brutal and savage civil conflict that ravaged particularly their homeland, the breadbasket of the nation.

Fingers have been pointed at certain indecent, crude and uncouth politicians from the district desperate to gain political recognition and win favours at the expense of peace in their mother land by masterminding heinous acts of killing and arson.

The ugly and horrific incident took the life of a young man, Osman Fengai, aka Wizzy, who was mercilessly tabbed and later died in hospital. In addition, at least three homes were set ablaze, and the opposition political party office, the Coalition for Change (C4C), vandalized in broad day light.

The Human Rights Committee in Kono and the Kono people in general, have strongly condemned the dastardly acts and called for justice to be done and break the cycle of political impunity that continues to eat deep into the fabric of our political culture.

The Committee particularly noted that the voting pattern in the district in recent elections had been influenced by the persistent human rights violations inflicted on the district over time, citing inter alia, the latest lower elections of the ruling party.

Accusing fingers have been pointed against the police in Kono for apparent complacency and failure to do their job effectively and fairly in the interest of peace and tranquility of the residents.

Sierra Express Media condemns the acts in the strongest of terms and urge the authorities to not leave any stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to book without delay. We call on the Sierra Leone police to redouble their efforts in the execution of national duties without fear or favour.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Kono in their quest for justice and protection of their human rights at all levels.
