As Ramadan sets in Rice price hikes
Contrary to recent assurances by importers and government officials that stores would not run dry of rice, the staple food in the country, information filtering from the Commodities Trading Company, main importers of rice, it is feared that the commodity may become scarce as the holy month of Ramadan sers in.
A trader who visited the stores told Sierra Express Media that there was already an increment of Le 10, 000 on all sizes of bags of rice and the most demanded Pousawa brand was not available in the stores.
“I had to buy from street traders at a higher cost because the stocks in stores have finished”, she said.
The situation has the likelihood of sparking food crisis if quick measures are not put in place to nip it to the bud, said a businessman in Freetown.
