Sierra Leone Parliament Warns Journalists

The Speaker of the Sierra Leone House of Parliament, Dr. Chernor Abass Bundu and Deputy Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mathew Nyuma has warned Press Gallery on what they described as premature publication.

The warning was made on Tuesday 4th February, 2020 in the well of Parliament after Salone Times Newspaper carried a banner headline titled “Parliament Rejects Bio’s Nominees,”.

According to Hon. Mathew Nyuma, no nominee was rejected on Monday in Parliament, adding that the thirteen (13) nominees have gone through successful interview and have been approved yesterday.

Hon. Nyuma invoked Section 57 Sub-section 2 of the Constitution of Sierra Leone that premature publication is contempt of Parliament. He therefore cautioned Press Gallery to wait for a conclusion before publishing any information to the public.

He warned Journalists to be careful and cross check their information before going to the press to avoid contempt of Parliament and he vehemently stated that the Salone Times Newspaper in the custom of carrying false reports against Parliament through their female reporter in Parliament, Josephine Lagawoh. He stated that such misleading reports will not aid the expedition of the Criminal Libel Law to be enacted.

In his brief statement, Hon Dr. Chernor Abass Bundu frowned at the way and manner media practitioners are floating in Parliament and promised to meet with the Clerk of Parliament to list down all names of media houses supposed to send accredited representatives to Parliament.
