Sierra Leone Police Admits Tear Gas Explosion to Stop Sam Sumana
The Regional Commander for Northwest, AIG Ansumana Bornoh has admitted that tear gas canister fired to stop former Vice President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Alhaji Chief Samuel Sam Sumana from entering Port Loko Township.
Speaking at a press conference held last Thursday at the Police Headquarters in Freetown, AIG Bornoh recalled that on Sunday, sixteenth June, this year at around four thirty to five PM, he was informed about the arrival of Ex-Vice President Alhaji Chief Samuel Sam Sumana at Lungi Airport.
He reiterated that as an intelligent led Police, AIG Bornoh said they cross check to put security strategy in place after receiving intelligence about his arrival. “I got and intelligence that Sam Sumana has intention to enter Port Loko”, he told pressmen adding that he immediately telephoned the Mayor of Port Loko, Abubakarr Zozo Kamara if he has any knowledge about Sam Sumana’s intention to entre Port Loko Township. He said the Mayor responded that he was aware and would inform his men not to allow him enter the Town. AIG Bornoh stressed on the important to always inform the Police whenever important people invited. ‘’I will hold responsible for any security lapses at that part of the country in the name of the Sierra Leone Police’’, he stated adding that he called his men and commanded them to deliberately mount three checkpoints at Lungi, Port Loko and Malakuray to prevent former VP from entering Port Loko as a result of responding to information they received about his arrival. AIG Bornoh continued that upon arriving Lungi, the met Sam Sumana had already crossed the first checkpoint where he was engaged not to enter Port Loko Township but continued to the second and third checkpoints at Malakuray Junction where he was also given the same admonition but according to the Police, Sam Sumana failed to listen to security advise and forcefully entered the Port Loko Township where he started walking among a huge crowd. ‘
‘’I went there with my Police officers and stopped him with the words that they expected much from him as a honorable man who had served as former Chairman of the Police Council to understand Police laws’’, AIG Bornoh informed listeners.
He frankly stated that they stopped Sam Sumana to enter the Port Loko Mini Stadium where he was said to grace a football gala kick off ceremony and later address a cross section of supporters that gave him the warmest welcome for allegedly failing to take permission from the Police which responsible to maintain law and order. He was therefore escorted out of Port Loko Town to Mile thirty Eight where the Police said, his vehicle was thoroughly searched.
