March 24th Is World Tuberculosis Day

Dr. Lynda Foray has informed participants in a one day stakeholders meeting at the Hill Valley Hotel that Sierra Leone would join the world to observe World Tuberculosis Day on March 24th, 2019.

She stated that the day is commemorated to mark the discovery of the bacteria that causes Tuberculosis by Dr. Robert Koch in 1882.

Dr. Lynda Foray described TB as an infectious disease and mentioned that persistent cough for more than two weeks, fever, weight loss and night sweat as some of the common signs and symptoms of the disease.

She highlighted that good governance, partnership and coordination, a well-equipped and functional laboratory, skill clinical and laboratory staff, cross cutting partnership and system building, an efficient specimen referral system are the critical elements of TB prevention and cure.

The World Health Organization (WHO) representative advanced that Sierra Leone is categorized with Cambodia as high burden countries of TB because she said, they reported high number of TB cases.

The Deputy Mayor of the Freetown City Council (FCC), Osman Koroma described TB as a series of infectious diseases that affects the lungs and other parts adding that in the early years, a person is considered dead after diagnosed of TB.

He assured that the meeting would help increase knowledge of City Mayors and district Chairpersons on the management of TB and thanked the Civil Society Movement Against Tuberculosis (CISMAT-SL) for what he described as a wonderful initiative. He expressed FCC’s determination to fight against TB.

‘’TB is a team work because she said, it is currently one of the programs that do not have partners except Global Fund and SOLTHIS NGO which is playing the role of research’’ she told listeners and mentioned that MSF is also coming to partner.
