Emanuel A.B. Kamara Faces Death Threats

Since the March 2018 Elections were held in Sierra Leone some 9 months back, there has been a high level of criticisms against the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party over many issues of national interest. These issues include among others the disregard for the Rule of Law and Democratic best practices, Politically motivated violence, Violation of the Constitution and due process.

Both at home and abroad Sierra Leoneans on both print and electronic media have added there voice in condemnation of the deteriorating state of abuse of power by the new government and politically motivated intimidation and harassment by known supporters of the new government in the small West African State.

One of Sierra Leone’s social media commentators, EMANUEL ALIEU BARADAMASSIE KAMARA who leaves in GREECE is one such individual who is reported to have come under persistent scathes of verbal attacks and death threats from people believed to be supporters and operatives of the Governing Party.

Death threats, motherly invectives and verbal attacks have been reported to have been directed to Mr. Emmanuel as well as his family back home from people unknown via social media(WhatsApp, Facebook on phone etc).

It is reported that a day after the commemoration of the country’s notorious January 6 1999 invasion of Freetown. *Emmanuel as he is commonly called received calls via WhatsApp and WhatsApp chats messages from people unknown, with threats of killings of any known family member or *Emmanuel* himself at any slightest opportunity.

An individual identified as Mr. Elle is reported to have promised to assassinate Emmanuel no sooner he steps foot on the shores of Sierra Leone.

In the words of Emmanuel, he quoted the Mr. Elle to have stated that “We are going to torture and kill you like we did to Bambay Kamara and others (1992) were killed.

Also, photos and phone number of Emmanuel are making the rounds on Social media (WhatsApp, Facebook etc) by unknown individuals,

Castigating the young man on allegations of Treason among others.

Mr. Emmanuel when interviewed on the phone  expressed his right to freedom of expression as enshrined in the Sierra Leone Constitution 1991 but fears for the safety of his family members most of whom are living in Sierra Leone.

Screen shots of WhatsApp and Facebook communications can be found below.

The Sierra Leone Police in an interview in one of the local radio stations a few weeks have vowed to arrest certain persons including a name called Emmanuel anywhere possible and bring him to Sierra Leone to face charges which the Police has described as “inciting and seditious”. The Police in the interview had vowed to use the Interpol arm of their force to arrest Emmanuel and bring him home.

Also the Sierra Leone police have vowed to arrest another Sierra Leonean by the name of GIBRIL BANGURA another social media commentator living abroad.

These commitments by the SLP come amidst criticisms from certain quarters of the public on the police use of brute force in some parts of the country which have led to deaths whose investigations still remain unconcluded.

However the social media have become a common place for individuals to air their views with ease and clarity.
