Moyamba District Complains of Poor Sanitation
Residents of Moyamba District, one of the four districts in the Southern province, are seriously concerned about the present health and the entire district sanitation system, which is rapidly going backward, rather than improving. In an interview with Action Aid acting country Director Mr. Mohamed Sillah whose organization is presently undertaking some sanitation project in Moyamba district, he told Sierra Express Media that the entire district had been suffering form poor sanitation such as pure drinking water insufficient toilet system in the district.
But Mr. Mohamed Sillah said according to their findings about 35% of the people residing within the district are actually suffering from this poor sanitation as he said any place without toilet, that particular environment is not free from sickness and in fact is very much hard for children to grow there with good health. Mr. Sillah said in the district, there are certain chiefdoms which have been going without pure drinking water and it is now their project in providing them water well or hand litter pipes and they have constructed up to 90 taps in the district and built about 60 toilets for the entire district. Their concern is to make sure that all citizens in Sierra Leone have access to safe drinking water and conducive toilets as health is wealth, he said. Explaining about their challenges, Mr. Sillah said it is not easy to reach certain chiefdoms in the district as some are not motorable and youths are not ready to work even though they offered them a job, but they concentrate purely on their domestic work rather than take their job so it sometimes becomes difficult to transfer working materials to the various chiefdoms.
Notwithstanding, he said the district and chiefdom leaders are really cooperating with them, to see that their project goes on successfully he said.
