Toying with COVID in Sierra Leone!

Toying with COVID in Sierra Leone!

To say that the Coronavirus pandemic is a global killer is an understatement, describing the magnitude of its effects on humanity in other parts of the world. It therefore goes without saying, that Governments and individuals should take the fight against this monster of a disease rather seriously.

Regardless of the myriad of conspiracy theories about the origin and purported purpose of the pandemic, which some schools of thought believe to be a calculated devilish attack on humanity by some ill-intentioned scientists or Governments, the fact that the disease affects and kills indiscriminately, is enough reason to deal with it with the attentiveness it deserves.

Across the world, the most powerful nations have been brought to their knees by the invisible virus by devastating their economies unprecedentedly; hence the scale of honesty and commitment directed into tackling it.

Back home, the Government made such loud noise about keeping the dangerous stranger at bay for a long time before breaking through the barrier, when the index case was announced by the President in March of 2020 almost five months after it broke out in Wuhan province, China.

Since then, Sierra Leoneans have been going through hell on earth, having to comply with a whole gamut of measures meant to contain the virus, ranging from restriction of movement to curtailment of social and economic rights.

Until the emergence of the so-called ‘Third Wave Delta Variant’, the numbers of infected and death cases had been kept unbelievably low. But while the Government takes pride at flexing its muscles by repeatedly introducing and re-introducing precautionary measures in theory, practically, such measures, such as the most basic masking up and social distancing, are largely un-adhered to, and begging the question whether Government is indeed serious about COVID. The scenes of congested market places, public transport, bars and restaurants to name a few, make us believe that we are toying with COVID. As a Government and people, we need to show a more responsible behavior as proof that COVID is real. It’s not enough to suspend democratic fundamental rights and freedoms of our people without sufficient reason and evidence for doing so.

Finally, we strongly urge all and sundry to comply with all anti-COVID measures as stipulated by NACOVERC and approved by the Presidential Task Force from time to time.
