MP Calls For Decriminalization Of Marijuana Cultivation
Following the recent raid of two villages in the Mile 91 Constituency, a Member of Parliament (name withheld) said privately on Thursday 13th September that people “should legally cultivate marijuana and export it to foreign countries for money” in line with the trend internationally to legalise the drug for medicinal use, albeit under strict supervision.
It is his opinion that marijuana should not be disqualified barely on moral grounds, but its medical and economic benefits should be considered.
Whilst not suggesting that the cultivation of the drug should be left in anybody’s hand, proper plans and strict control measures should be developed to ensure it is not abused.
He further maintained that since the drug has been proven to have medicinal value, exportation of marijuana will bring in much needed foreign exchange and boost the country’s economy. He further disclosed that several countries in the world have legalised the use of the drug, especially for its medicinal value.
Scientists in Europe, USA, Asia and other countries, have proven that Marijuana can cure a wide range of diseases, evidences of which can be accessed through the internet, he added.
Whilst fighting against drug abuse, the cultivation of marijuana should not be confused with its use for recreational purposes.
Marijuana’s most important component is its medicinal value. Other drugs like cocaine, Heroin and Tramadol that cause great harm to the individual and the populace are the drugs that should be vigorously pursued in this fight, as they pose the greatest risk to human living, especially the young population.
Marijuana’s economic and scientific benefits far exceed its social benefit. He maintained that the suggestion that marijuana’s cultivation will adversely affect rice cultivation is a myth and that the development of a strategic plan to address rice cultivation will yield the desired result.
It is an open secret that top officials in Government and other institutions are regular consumers of marijuana, albeit discreetly. A great opportunity now presents itself for the country’s economic development from Marijuana, if only focus can be taken from the recreational use of the drug to its more important value, which is its medicinal use and save the lives of many people suffering from epilepsy, cancer etc. as well as make money from its exportation to the laboratories where the necessary elements are extracted for use.
May common sense prevail!
