As Consultant MD ReplaceD by Deputy, SALPOST May Collapse
The replacement of the former Sierra Leone Postal Services (SLAPOST) Consultant Managing Director (MD), Samuel J. Koroma has been considered as not only politically motivated but has the tendency to render the sector defunct for the fact that his Deputy, Mr. Ibrahim Kamara was part of the Koroma’s administration that is said to be a corrupt regime.
According to investigation, Koroma was targeted because he was labeled as associating himself with the main opposition, All Peoples Congress (APC) despite the fact that he is an expert hired by the Government of Sierra Leone under former President Koroma’s administration to change the bad shape of the institution which he succeeded to achieve.
Samuel J. Koroma had worked with the Universal Postal Services (UPS) in the United States of America where he was paid in dollars for many years but decided to return home to bring modernization in the sector.
He took over SALPOST in 2012 when it was considered as an archaic institution that could no longer provided the necessary services it supposed to render to the public but he was allegedly dismissed as a result of what many described as political affiliation.
When he took over administration, there was nothing to write home about in terms of computer accessories and other vital machineries that could fast track the transfer of mails across the country but his regime saw massive installation of computers and purchased two buses which are not only use to transfer mails nationwide but also use for the purpose of transportation to bring more income in to the sector.
Prior to his appointment as new Consultant MD, the whole building was resembled a dumping site with no good toilet facility but with his firm commitment, he was able to renovate the building and installed toilet facility.
All this started when the former MD decided to retire workers who have reached or exceeded retirement age to be replaced by active young people.
Investigation unearthed that most of the employees at the SALPOST prior to the coming of Koroma are undergraduate, in fact some did not even possessed either BECE or WASSCE qualification but Koroma managed to increase their salaries above minimum wage so that they can realize their potential.
In an interview, workers of the SALPOST are still expressing fear over the new appointee for the fact that he was working in agreement with the dismissed Managing Director who has wealth of experience in postal services.
Workers are therefore calling on the Minister of Information and Communications, Mohamed Rahman Swarray to institute regular monitoring system so that it cannot be business as usual.
