Head of EU Delegation Applauds Sierra Leone on Positive Democratic Values
The new Head of the European Union to Sierra Leone, Ambassador Tom Vens (who replaced Peter Vesteeg) has on Wednesday 11th October, called on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. S.B.B. Introduced by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Chernor R.M. Bah, Ambassador Vens praised the legislature for enhancing good governance and democracy and promised to work with Parliament in strengthening the Legislative process. He called for accountability through parliamentary oversight and acknowledged that Sierra Leone “has a good track record in democratizationâ€.
Welcoming the EU Delegate earlier, the Deputy Speaker highlighted challenges in the electoral process, noting the need for a credible voter register as no one should be disenfranchised.
Highlighting the role of Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Speaker recalled the healthy relationship that has existed between the ruling government and the opposition. On the issue of accountability, he maintained that it is high on the agenda of the President and of Parliament. He urged for total collaboration between Parliament and the EU.
