AVP-SL crowns Miss FBC 2010

In an ardent effort to mark this year’s social events at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, the Alternatives to Violence Project – Sierra Leone (AVP-SL) has made a grandiose beauty pageantry show and Awards Night in order to consolidate peaceful co-existence among student on campus.

This Awards Night and Fashion Show took place on 7th May, 2010 at the Memorable Amphitheatre open grounds. This event which attracted students from the various faculties on campus witnessed the show including other socialites from down town.

It could be recalled that over the years, students’ activities on campus had been highly characterized by violence and acrimonious behavior which have stained the reputation of good students who don’t meddle in students’ politics. However, this unhealthy competition for political power on campus had open up a breeding ground for hatred and violent behavior between the ‘White’ and’ Black’ camps.

The ‘Whiteman-Blackman’ stuff has deteriorated the  once buoyant life that students use to enjoy in the early 70’s to 80’s.The race for political power on campus has brought about a great gap among students that is very difficult to bridge. It is against this backdrop that the Alternatives to Violence Project Sierra Leone (AVP-SL) has organized this once in a year event in a collective spirit to bridging the long standing vacuum that has blurred the face of students Unionism on FBC campus.

The Awarding Ceremony and the Fashion show were simultaneously carried out by participants from the different faculties thereby making meaningful participation towards the success of the programme. Nonetheless, awards of different nomenclatures were distributed intermittently during the fashion show, and awardees who include lecturers and students took turns in receiving their certificates of merits.

Over 50 awards were evenly handed over to the various faculty members, among which, 11 (eleven) awards and their awardees were meticulously earmarked for merit; by order of hierarchy, the first award goes to the Principal of Fourah Bay College , Professor T.B.R Yormah, who also doubled as the Father of the Year; Mr. Monrovia, Students’ Warden of the year; Mr. Isaac Massaquoi, Head of Department of the year; Mohamed A. Timbo, Gentleman of the year; faculty of the year ,Faculty of Social Sciences and Law; society of the year, Engineering Society; Best Behaved Student, Makuta Momoh; Mr. Prince A. Kenny, Lecturer of the year ; and the Best Peace Advocate of the year goes to Yayah M. Kamara, who fortunately happened to emerged as a black rose in a white garden as he was succinctly described by one socialite.

As for the Fashion Show, three beautiful queens contested for the position of Miss FBC 2010. These distinguished contestants are Miss Fatmata Bah of the Art Faculty; Miss Kadiatu Fofana of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law; and finally, we have Miss Sally Diana Koroma of the department of Economics who came out victorious in the final assessment and eventually clenched the enviable position of Miss FBC 2010.

In giving a picturesque description of Miss FBC 2010, one would reservedly describe her as tall, slim and velvet black in complexion with neatly set dentitions, small mouth and carrying round shiny eyes. By all indications, the Miss FBC crowned this year is a real African belle. She epitomizes the beauty of FBC’s female students and also stands as a symbol of peace to every student on campus and to all Sierra Leoneans as a whole.

Climaxing the occasion of Miss FBC 2010, local artists from all records label made spectacular performance for the audience. Music fans of both Black Leo and LAJ cheered the watchful gathering with thunderous clap and brag lyrics. In a whole, the show was fantastic and all the excitements ended up in a peaceful atmosphere.
