Office Cleaner In $35,000 Thefts

Magistrate Dr. Abou Bakarr Binneh Kamara of Court No.1 yesterday remanded Lansana Turay for an alleged Conspiracy to defraud contrary to law and Larceny contrary to Section 7(1) (a) of the Larceny Act 1916.

According to the Particulars of Offence, the accused on Tuesday 16th May, 2017, in Freetown Sierra Leone Conspired with others unknown to commit a Felony to wit Larceny by Servant and on the same date at Ogoo Lane Brookfield’s Freetown, stole the sum of $35,000 U equivalent to Le200,625,000 belonging to Zainab Turay.

In her testimony, the principal witness, Zainab Turay who is the Manager of Bruns Wick Shipping Company at Brookfield’s, told the Court that she recognized the accused person as the office cleaner.

According to Zainab Turay, on the 16th May 2017, at around 9.30 a.m., she came to her office and found that her safe was not found where she normally placed it.  She therefore alerted the security officer and other staff during which the security officer informed her that the accused person Lansana Turay came around 6.30 a.m., to the office and later returned home.

In acting upon the information given by the security officer, she called the accused person on his cellphone; who later came to the office after an hour to respond to the complainant of the lost safe. The accused immediately entered one of the rooms and discovered the lost safe. According to Zainab, Le 22,460,000 was found in the safe while $35,000 was already missing from the safe. ‘’This money contained in the safe, she said was for shipping and transfer of goods.”

The matter was adjourned for the 6th July, 2017.
