Drivers on Road Safety Campaign
For the past few months, the Sierra Leone Motor Drivers and General Transport Workers Union has been on a massive road campaign geared towards the drastic reduction of road fatalities by sensitizing the membership on the essence of adhering to road safety regulations.
In an interview with this medium, the National Auditor of the union, Maulaya Conteh, disclosed that the campaign is engaging all road users in order to have a safer road for all.
This, he said, is done through massive engagement of stakeholders in the road and transport sectors especially their membership who account for most of the casualties on the roads.
He furthered that the campaign is to instill in their members the act of professionalism in terms of road usage, thereby encouraging all drivers to stop over speeding on highways and to discourage them from drinking alcohol and driving.
“The union has machines to check all drivers for alcohol consumption when on duties and punitive action is taken against defaulters,” he stated, observing that there has been a dramatic progress in road safety since they started the campaign.
Conteh concluded that though the union appreciates the road extension and the toll, they are worried over the exact amount they are to pay and how to make the payment.
