EDITING A EULOGY
(FOR AUNT JOY SAMAKE OF BALMAYA ART GALLERY – A PATRON OF THE ART IN SIERRA LEONE. MAY HER SOUL REST IN PEACE)
She held a candle in the dark
For writers to write, Carvers to carve
Painters to paint and singers to sing
She passed a torch lit in the fires of yesterday
To set on fire the cinders of hope smoldering in every soul
She was hope incarnate holding a beacon
For beings tossed from human storm to her shore
Delete that she never held a candle, she was a candle;
Burning, waxing and waning for us to write
Paint and carve the quintessence of our being
She never held a beacon. She was herself a beacon of hope
Tending the wounded and the broken in her shore
Highlight that; she was a midwife of the art
Charging; push and pull wherever there was a birth pang
Increase the font here; she was a mother to all those
Longing for motherly warmth and a shoulder to lean on
Embolden these lines; she was human; simply a being
The kind they don’t make any more in a less compassionate world
