The machines according to Mohamed Sesay, the Quality Control Laboratory Manager at the Pharmacy Board will ensure those condoms are tested for holes and possible weaknesses that may result in breakage of the product when used.

Dr. Brima Kargbo, Head of the Aids Secretariat said “because we are not certain as to the strength and hole-proof of condom products, there is absolute for us to test for these anomalies so as to assure the health and wellbeing of our citizens.”

The Director told the media that the fact that some condom products in the world fall short of the expected quality is a drawback in the fight against HIV/Aids and we don’t want to see a situation in Sierra Leone wherein we see this singular factor derailing the tremendous progress made so far in the ensuring that there is stability in the incidence of the disease in the country.

Speaking to media men at his office in Freetown, the Registrar of the Pharmacy Board Wiltshire CN Johnson said “this is a welcomed development for the country’s health sector, we at the Pharmacy Board are mandated by the Government to ensure quality in the health care service delivery by making sure that all medical and pharmaceutical products coming into the country meet expected standards and quality. It is therefore a boost to our work if we can test for efficacy in condom products so that the health of our citizenry can be assured.”

In a conducted tour of the condom testing laboratory, it was revealed that the Aids Secretariat made available both the electronic and manual testing machines. As part of the equipment the Laboratory manager revealed that there is the Accurate Inflation system and the Tensor Tester that tests for the amount of pressure the condom withstands whilst in use.

The NAS Director also revealed that the secretariat collaborates with the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone to ensure that Anti-retrovirals administered to HIV/Aids Patients are test for quality and efficacy they are issued to them.”
