Disaster …18 perish in road accident
Eighteen (18) passengers in a commercial vehicle (Poda-Poda) on Wednesday March 16th, 2016 perished at Rogbangba Junction when a truck loaded with heavy machines lost one of its wheels and eventually ran the passenger vehicle.
The accident obstructed traffic flow and passengers plying the route were shocked to see the victims lying in a pool of blood after the accident had taken place.
Some passengers that incurred serious injuries were hurriedly loaded in vehicles for emergency treatment at Connaught and Emergency hospitals but later died on the way.
As at press time, the registration numbers of the two vehicles involved in the accident, the names of drivers and owners of the vehicles were not known, while the Traffic Division of Waterloo Police Station is investigating the cause of the accident.
The truck that hit the Poda-Poda is owned by the Commodity Trading Company (CTC) and reports are that the driver went underground when the accident occurred. The Poda-Poda driver was among those who perished in the accident.
Prior to the accident, an OSD personnel had been hit and killed by a driver whose identity and vehicle’s registration number are yet to be ascertained by the police.
The OSD officer died on the spot and was abandon by the unknown driver. The remains of the OSD officer and the bodies of the other victims are at the Connaught Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsies.
Meanwhile, names of the victims were not released by the appropriate authorities as at press time.
