Parliament cautions stakeholders on seaweed
The Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Fisheries and Marine Resources has on Tuesday, 27th October, 2015 cautioned stakeholders of the various line Ministries on the current proliferation of seaweed in the country at the new administrative building, OAU Drive, Tower Hill in Freetown.
According to the Chairman Hon. Ambassador Patrick Foyah of Constituency 001 in the Kailahun District, he decided to summon and caution the various line Ministries and their subsidiaries as the people’s representative as well as the Chairman of the Oversight Committee on Fisheries and Marine Resources which has the mandate to inquire into activities of various Ministries, Departments and Agencies including the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, the Sierra Leone Ports Authority, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.
The Chairperson of the Environmental Protection Agency Sierra Leone, Mrs. Jattu Jallow, explained that the seaweed is seriously affecting the country.
She stated that the present situation of the seaweed is unprecedented and very devastating to the economic, social and humanitarian sectors.
She maintained that they are very worried with the present situation as the seaweed has a very bad odour with negative effects on water fishermen and beach goers.
In his contribution, the Fisheries Officer in the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine resources, Mr. Lahai D. Sesay, reported that the seaweed has caused a lot embarrassment for the people of Sierra Leone.
He pointed out that the marine and coastal environment is suffering a lot because of this menace.
The representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Aviation and the Sierra Leone Ports Authority expressed their dissatisfaction over the menace, noting that they would give their fullest support to get rid of the seaweed from the beaches.
