Hip hop dancer Kymberlee Jay
British plus size hip hop dancer Kymberlee Jay found fame after being hand-picked by Madonna to appear in promo videos.
Predictably, her striking appearance and unconventional dancer’s physique simultaneously inspired women and sparked controversy in the industry. She is now an athlete on the Nike payroll, a TV presenter, choreographer, and of course a dancer.
She recently spoke about, er, waacking and krumping.
You seem to have so many jobs, how do you cope?
I don’t know! I have always enjoyed being busy and learning new things so I guess that’s part of it. All of my activities connect somehow so it’s quite easy to multi-task — like when I have my “choreographer” hat on, I can also be a Nike Athlete and Performance Coach! It can be stressful and I work a lot of hours, but I wouldn’t change it for the world!
Are there any new underground styles emerging?
I think the underground style which is still least understood and being still being discovered is Krump. It’s a very personal and exciting style that looks like it’s extremely wild but is actually very controlled. A style that is making a big come back on the underground is also waacking. This was hugely popular in the nightclubs of Los Angeles in the ’70s and is fast becoming the newest trend on the scene.
How did you end up dancing with Madonna?
Madonna saw me in the Nike commercial called “Take sport – add music” and asked me if I would like to join her in her music video for Hung Up. This led on to an appearance in the video for Sorry which was extremely exciting. Meeting Madonna in person was awesome; she is amazing and a lovely person.
What are you most focused on now?
Currently I am very focused on being an artist manager, I am new to the music industry in this capacity so I’m definitely still learning.
