$804M for Post Ebola Recovery, Koroma Poised to Revamp Economy

The President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, has expressed determination to improve on key priority areas such as health, education, energy, water and the private sector development through a strong delivery mechanism in the course of the nine months Post Ebola Recovery activities.

The President made the commitment on 24th July, at the Miatta Conference Hall at Youyi Building in Freetown on during the official launching of his Post Ebola Recovery Priorities.

The grand launching occasion attracted Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, political party representatives, Paramount Chiefs, Councilors, Mayors, donor partners and other stakeholders from all works of life.

The President cautioned donors to ensure that the development partners they are funding act in a transparent and accountable manner and he entrusted great responsibility to stakeholders like MP’s, Councilors, Paramount Chiefs among others to work with him and his development partners transparent manner.

He described the delivery of the Post Ebola Recovery plan as a life and death game and he noted that for over a year now, the prevailing Ebola Virus Disease in the country has disturbed our economic growth, reversed the gains we have made in almost all the sectors.

“With the intervention of our development partners, today we are at the verge of conquering the killer disease.” President Koroma re-echoed and he mentioned that defeating the virus and getting to zero is not enough but to make sure we stay at zero. He singled out the need to restore livelihood of people who have suffered for over a year.

“During the nine-month Post Ebola Recovery Period, we will not only continue building the resilience of the health sector and transform our road network but we will revamp the energy and water sectors which remain high priorities,” the President stated.

He disclosed that $804. 2m has been pledged to Sierra Leone for the Post Ebola Recovery and 1.7 Billion US Dollars to all the Ebola-affected countries in the West Africa sub region.

In his presentation, the Chief of Staff at State House, Saidu Konton Sesay, recounted the massive destruction the Ebola epidemic has caused to this nation, especially to our health workers, stressing that we should learn a big lesson from the outbreak and realize the importance of putting in place good systems and taking timely decisions.

The Chief Executive Officer, National Ebola Response Centre (NERC), Rtd Major Paolo Conteh, recalled that on November 11th last year, the country recorded 560 cases within a week but that now, only three or less cases are reported nationwide, a situation which he referred to as a remarkable victory.
