From Green Buses to Red Buses

When the former Tejan Kabba-led Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) government brought its own buses, many, if not all of them, were painted green, possibly, to mislead the citizenry into believing that they were bought by SLPP and belonged to the party, not Sierra, otherwise, they would have been all painted green, white and blue.

Now the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) government has imported its own hundred buses and, like in the case of SLPP, many of the buses are painted red to prove to us beyond every reasonable doubt that they are APC buses. But is it proper for national assets to be carrying party colors instead of the colors of the national flag? Do these buses belong to the parties or the nation?

I will not be surprised if I wake up one fine morning and see the National Stadium, House of Parliament, State House, the Law Court and our historic Cotton Tree all in red colors as the new buses.

Perhaps one of the best ways to advertize a political party is to paint national assets with its color. Who does not know that the red sun party brought the hundred new buses and who did not know that the green palm tree party brought the long bellow buses. Why not advertize the colors of our national flag to manifest maximum loyalty to our country or is it that our party loyalty has overshadowed our national loyalty we keep pledging everyday?

However, I am not oblivious of the fact that in Sierra Leone today, party colors are having a strong influence on our political behavior as evident in the fact that when you were green clothes, you are automatically associated with SLPP and when you are in red attire you are APC. If you are not lucky, the color of the clothes you wear can cost you your job.

I conclude by suggesting that all the hundred new buses must bear the colors of our national flag, not the color of the flag of any party. They belong to Sierra Leone, not to the party.

  • What Sierra Leone needs are:-
    1. A truly independent Anti-Corruption Commission and Commissioner not ones who would only do as they are told.
    2. Genuine respect and attention to the apolitical outputs of our Auditor-General and her department – visit their website and read contents.
    3. The present Sierra Leone APC Government – similar to its predecessor – lacks ethical and credible assets maintenance management strategies, policies, and, practices; as confirmed by national electricity generation, collection, supply, and distribution.
