Industrial Court Orders Le24M to Sacked Employee

The Industrial Court of Sierra Leone has begun to bite lawless employers who violate labor laws by refusing to pay end-of-service benefit to sacked or redundant employees.

The learned and strict President of the court, Supreme Court Justice Hamilton, has ordered that a defaulting employer, Josephine Dauda of the Good Shepherd Ministry, to pay the sum of Le24million to an employee, Abie Carew, who in 2013 was summarily and illegally dismissed without pay after serving the ministry for five years.

While recently handing down the historic ruling against the plaintiff, Josephine Dauda who happens to be the daughter of our Internal Affairs Minister, Joseph Bandabla Dauda, Justice Hamilton said he was convinced that the Prosecution Lawyer, Counsel Showers and his client proved their case beyond all reasonable doubt with supporting documents to disprove the plaintiff and therefore he had no alternative but to rule in favor of the plaintiff.

The fact that the Industrial Court has ruled against the daughter of our Internal Affairs Minister is a vivid manifestation of the court’s independence and freedom from political interference.
