Agriculture Minister impressed with oil palm project

Agriculture Minister impressed with oil palm project

The country’s agriculture sector is currently scoring lots of success. Making the sector a commercial viable one is one of the goals of the present Minister, Dr. Joseph Sam Sesay who is currently spending a restless moment to achieve his dream. His successful tour on various projects in Kenema over the weekend has inspired farmers to be more robust in ensuring that President Koroma’s development plans for the agriculture sector is seen implemented in the field.

With funding from IFAD and support from the Agriculture Ministry, the Njala University is currently implementing an oil palm nursing in Pendebu, Kenema District. The project will employ 200 youths who will be given an opportunity to be self-employed. Each of them will have an acre of oil palm cultivated in a bid to alleviate poverty.

Speaking to this press after an assessment of the project, Dr. Sam Sesay said he highly impressed to have young people coming onboard on tree crop cultivation. He added that although the project is a long term one, it will help greatly in building the future of young people.

“This demonstrates the commitment of the youths to adhere to clarion call of H.E. President Dr. Ernest Koroma who committed his life for the youths,” he said, and added that his Ministry has been resilient to ensure that it supports projects of such a nature. “As a government, we will do our best to make sure that food is available at all times and at an affordable cost,” the Minister said.

The Head of Communications and Spokesman for the Ministry, Abubakarr Sidique Daramy said the availability of sufficient food during the Ebola period was is no magic but rather it is due to the commitment of farmers across the country. He commanded the leadership of President Koroma and his able Lieutenant Dr. Sam Sesay for proving the required support to farmers.
