Sierra Leonean Students in China Brace-up for Annual Convention

Sierra Leonean students pursuing different fields of academia in various cities in the People’s Republic of China will be converging in Beijing, China’s capital for their annual convention, which amongst other reasons is aimed at bringing students together to discuss issues of interest to their welfare.

With support from the Embassy of Sierra Leone, Sierra Leonean students, who form the greater majority of Sierra Leoneans in the People’s Republic of China,   will be hosting their convention at the premises of the Embassy in Beijing from February 18th to the 22nd, a period also marking the annual Chinese Spring Festival.

The theme for this year’s convention will be ‘Effect of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) In the Three Mano River Union Countries with Particular Focus on Sierra Leone.’

Admonishing the students prior to this year’s convention, Ambassador Foh called on them to always be law abiding and work in tandem with the laws and policies of the People’s Republic of China and to particularly pay attention to the Sierra Leone PR China bilateral friendly relationship and Sierra Leone’s respect for the One-China Policy.

The climax of the convention will be the election of a new Executive that will steer the affairs of the Sierra Leone Students Union for the next one year. Meanwhile, two aspirants have declared their interest for the Presidency, namely Adikali Sesay and Abdulai Fallah Tengbeh, both PhD candidates.

Adikali Sesay is running his campaign on the platform of continuity, reminding colleague students how he has “selflessly served the Union as Secretary General” and would therefore “wish to complete what I have admirably started….” Whilst assuring his colleagues   of his preparedness “for the task ahead in maximizing students’ welfare” if elected as President of the Sierra Leonean Student Union in China.

On his part, Abdulai Fallah Tengbeh, disclosed, he is running for the Presidency out of the conviction, of being “resourceful, committed…” and having “acquired the required experience needed” to lead the Union, which he said has been facing problems that needed to “be addressed immediately.” Tengbeh spoke of his commitment to work “with each of the would-be-elected Executive members of SLSCU” in furtherance of their Union’s core   principles of Unity and Peace.

The People’s Republic of China has continued to provide support to Sierra Leone in various sectors to build our country’s human resource capacity.

Every year, scholarship opportunities are provided through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to deserving Sierra Leoneans to further their studies in various areas, including Industrial Economics, Human Resource Management, Public Administration, Clinical Medicine, Civil Engineering, Applied Economics, Petroleum Engineering, Information and Communications and Agricultural Mechanization.

In addition, the Government of Sierra Leone, through the   Ministries of Education and Finance, makes annual provision of One Thousand, Eight Hundred US Dollars ($1,800), per student.

This year’s Keynote address is expected to be delivered by Sierra Leone’s Deputy Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Madam Kumba Alice Momoh.
