Following many criticism from the public, with some people describing the Sierra Leone Housing Corporation (SALHOC) as defunct, the newly appointed General Manager –Mrs. Lavern Fatmata Buya-Kamara is readily determined to sign a Performance Contract with President Ernest Bai Koroma and will further be appraised on her stewardship. It should be borne in mind that inadequate housing is an age old problem in Sierra Leone; hence the Housing and Estate companies have still not been able to salvage the growing housing problem. In lieu of this, the said Performance Contract will set into motion the process of total re-engineering of SALHOC’s management machinery and its core mandate which is to assist the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) in the provision of housing in an effort to improve the living standards of people.
According to Mrs. Buya Kamara, plans are at a very advanced stage for crafting out a National Housing Strategy which will also encapsulate GoSL’s clear Housing Policy on affordable houses. She went further to say that the housing sector has been overlooked for the past years, while passionately appealing for the provision of affordable and accessible housing facility.
SALHOC General Manager said: ’’The foundation of my administration is going to be built on our phrases used- Every Sierra Leonean deserve safe, secured and affordable house.’’
She reiterated that the Government must hugely invest in SALHOC because the Corporation’s mandate is geared towards the provision of low-cost houses for all Sierra Leoneans. As part of the Agenda for Prosperity pillar six, Mrs. Buya-Kamara noted, GoSL is beginning to focus on rebranding the housing sector.
Regarding insufficient housing, she disclosed that urbanisation has distorted the demographic of the country, stating ‘’that is why we have illegal structure all over the capital city.’’ She affirmed that some of these houses are not properly plan, they mostly lack proper toilet facility and clean water supply. As a result, ’’people are living in poor sanitary condition.’’
