SALHOC calls on parliament to review SALHOC Act

Freetown, March 22 (SLENA) – The Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Works, Housing and Infrastructure last week Wednesday engaged the Sierra Leone Housing Corporation on information sharing regarding the activities of SALHOC and some of the challenges faced by that establishment.  Works Committee in meeting with SALHOC

Briefing the committee, the Acting General Manager of SALHOC, Mr. Magnus Coker informed the committee about the difficulty of safeguarding government properties, noting that many tenants who occupy government facilities are reluctant to pay their rents.

Some of them, he said, are in court and appealed to the committee to review the SALHOC Act in order to give the company more powers to enforce some provisions in the Act.

Among the defaulters, Mr. Coker mentioned the Villa 16 rented by Fimet Construction Company.

Responding, Country Director of Fimet, Mohamed Gento said they have made good their financial obligation having paid Le75 million (seventy-five million leones) to SALHOC for lands occupied by his company.

Having listened to both sides, the oversight committee charted a way forward in resolving the conflict between SALHOC and Fimet Construction Company by involving SLRA, the Ministry of Works and SALHOC to resolve the dispute between the two.
