Ambassador Kamara proposes for Global Conference on Ebola
Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and Economic Commission for Africa, His Excellency Osman Keh Kamara has called on the African Union Commission to spearhead the holding of an international conference on the Ebola epidemic in the West African sub region.
Addressing the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) of the African Union Commission at its Headquarters in Addis Ababa on Tuesday 28th October 2014, Ambassador Kamara among other things described the current trend of the Ebola crisis as a non-traditional threat to human security. He classified Ebola as category one of non-traditional security threats to humanity. Ambassador Kamara stated that the virus has superseded major traditional threats to human existence, such as climate change, famine, drought, and even HIV/AIDS. He said even though there has been an increase in the international response to the fight against the pandemic, there is an urgent need for a global conference to be organized by the African Union in collaboration with the World Health Organization and other international organizations and partners, in order to discuss and adopt a framework document to combat the current outbreak of the Ebola virus and similar future health emergencies.
The PRC unanimously adopted Ambassador Kamara’s proposal, and further called on Member States of the African Union to respect the decisions of the Extra-Ordinary Summit of the Executive Council on Ebola, held in Addis Ababa in the first week of September this year. Additionally, the PRC expressed serious concerns on the continued closure of boarders and cancellation of flights to the affected countries and the stigmatization of citizens from the Ebola hardly hit region.
