To break chain of transmission Sowei’s stop Bondo initiation

In order to break the chain of transmission of the Ebola viral disease, the western area Soweis council in communities in the Western Area identified as Ebola hot spots assured the public to stop Bondo society initiation.

The Council made this commitment at a meeting held at the YWCA Hall to raise awareness among Soweis on the dangers that emanates from initiating the girl child into the Bondo Society at this time when the country’s peace is under threat by a communicable disease called Ebola.

Speaking on behalf of government, the Gender Adviser to President Naasu Fofanah urged the Council to realize the necessity for them as traditional leaders to join the fight against the virus adding that traditional practices like Bondo initiation is one way the disease can quickly and easily spread. She stated firmly that there is no traditional method to prevent Ebola and revealed that all interactions in the Bondo initiation have to do with body contact which she noted MUST be avoided at this deadly time. She emphasized on the way and manner government needed the prompt action of Soweis in the containment of the virus.

Speaking on behalf of Sowei’s Council, the President Western Area Sowei Council Madam Koloneh Sesay said no to Bondo initiation emphasizing that all Bondo bushes in the Western Area and the country as a whole have stopped initiation adding that they often monitor situations to ensure control. She thanked organizers for giving them what they called important training and materials and promised to deliver the message to the rest of their members of the council.

Concluding, she mentioned that the fight to overcome Ebola needs a concerted effort

Representing Advocacy Movement Network (AMNET), the Program and Gender coordinator Madam Aminata Koroma describe the Ebola virus as devilish and supplemented that it has ravaged the country as result of denial and admonished that regular hand washing with soap and water is the best way to contain the virus and singled out that it is dangerous to keep Ebola suspected persons at home.

She ended by calling on everyone to report early to hospitals when sick. She said no matter the amount of medics brought in to the country if we do not break the chain of transmission we will find it difficult to overcome the disease.
