16th anniversary of the death of Major Kula Samba

Today marks the 16th anniversary of the death of Major Kula Samba and 23 other great military officers, including President Kabbah’s former chief of defence staff, Brigadier Hassan Karim Conteh and his deputy Colonel James Max Kanga, as well as the heads of the Navy, Commander Samuel Kandu-Boy Gilbert and the airforce, Victor King , Colonel A. K Sesay, Lt. Col Victor King, Lt. Col P. F. Foday, Major Khemelai, Major Simbo, Sgt Abu Zagalo Sankoh, Cpl Gborie to name but few who were convicted of offences related to the military coup on 25 May 1997 in which the elected government of President Kabbah was overthrown and the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) took power and handed a death sentence by firing squad.

Major Kula Samba the only female executed, reintegratged child soldiers to a normal life and take them out from the bush. She did so with NPRC to SLPP and that was her job during AFRC.  The executions led to world-wide condemnation.
