China commits to functional mobile laboratory in Sierra Leone

China commits to functional mobile laboratory in Sierra Leone

Freetown, Sept. 5, 014 (MOHS) – The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Zhao Yanbo (in photo) has reiterated his government’s commitment to assist the Sierra Leone government with the setting up of a functional Mobile Laboratory and a Level P3 Fixed Laboratory in the fight against the Ebola deadly disease and other infectious diseases.

Speaking in the Ministry’s conference hall at Youyi Building in Freetown during a farewell courtesy call of the visiting Chinese Medical Team, Envoy Zhao Yanbo said the Mobile Laboratory will be urgently set up at the China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital in Jui in about 10 days time, and the proposed Level P3 (Three) Laboratory in three months time.

He said plans are underway to airlift the laboratory equipment in a week’s time, and when installed would effectively serve the Northern region and Western Urban Rural cases of Ebola.

Ambassador Yanbo maintained China’s position in the fight to contain the Ebola outbreak, and reassured the government and people of Sierra Leone of their support at all times. He spoke of the provision of additional protective personal equipment to the government.

The Chinese Director General of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Wang Yu said the proposed laboratory can treat 40 blood samples and more, and would give strong support to the Bombali, Port Loko and other districts in the north.

He dilated on the potential use of the Gbomsamba Treatment Centre after completion and promised to come with a 26-man staff to scale up action in the fight to contain the disease.

Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Abu Bakarr Fofanah on behalf of the Ministry, the government and people of Sierra Leone thanked the Ambassador, the visiting team and the Government of the People’s Republic of China for the continued support.

He described the setting up of the mobile lab as a welcoming news noting that it would strategically address part of the clinical challenges and delays because of its location at Jui, adding that it will also serve as an effective catalyst for the College of medicines and Allied Health Sciences.

Sierra Leone, the Minister said would continue to appreciate China as one of its key partner in the socio-economic development of the country.
