Eight staff suspended over Le1.6 billion fraud

The Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority (SLRTA), Dr. Sarah Finda Bendu, has unearthed massive fraud to the tune of 1.6 billion Leones at various substations following robust investigations she instituted in the past months.

The following staff have been suspended to the effect following further investigation by the Police and the Anti-Corruption Commission:

  • Mr. Patrick Musa– Vehicle Examiner and Head of Station (Pademba Road),
  • Mrs. Cassandra Sawyer– Licence Officer (Pademba Road),
  • Mrs. Adeline Kamara- Cashier(Pademba Road Station),
  • Mr. Edward Sahr Tengbeh- Vehicle Examiner and Head of Station (Kissy Africanus Road station),
  • Mr. Alusine Conteh– Licence Officer (Kissy)
  • Mrs. Agness Tucker (Nee Vamboi) – Cashier (Kissy Africanus Road station),
  • Mr. Lamin M. Sheriff– Head of Station and Vehicle Examiner (Lungi Station) and
  • Mr. John K. Kailie- Licence Officer (Lungi).

Initial investigations found that some front desk officers do print journals before the end of the day’s transaction window, and perform services which will not be accounted for even though the system would have captured it.

The SLRTA has been grappling with fraud since the reinstatement of Dr. Sarah Finda Bendu as substantive Executive Director in 2012. In her first year as Executive Director, Dr. Sarah Bendu unearthed fraud to the tune of 2.5 billion Leones perpetrated by senior management staff.

The alleged fraud has implications for SLRTA’s contributions to both the Road Maintenance Fund and the Consolidated Fund.
