Sierra Leone’s head doctor Sheik Umar Khan dies from Ebola
It is with deep regret that Sierra Express Media announces the news that Sheik Umar Khan (in photo), Sierra Leone’s head doctor fighting the deadly tropical virus Ebola in Sierra Leone died today. Dr. Khan contracted the deadly virus only a matter of days ago in his duties attending to infected patients. The death of Dr. Khan highlights the risks that health workers face in trying to combat the deadly disease.
Ebola is believed to have killed 672 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since the outbreak began sometime in February, according to the World Health Organisation. The contagious disease, which has no known cure, has symptoms that include vomiting, diarrhea and internal and external bleeding.
Only this week, His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma went to Kailahun to talk with the doctor.
Updates to follow.
