China Donates to Makeni Council

The Chinese Ambassador in Sierra Leone, His Excellency Qiu Shaofang, on Monday 22nd March 2010 paid an official visit to Makeni City in the Bombali District where he donated a 16 KVA generator and nine (9) sewing machines worth million of Leones to the Makeni City Council to alleviate some of their administrative and income generating constraints.

Addressing the jam packed gathering at the Makeni City Hall, Ambassador Qiu Shaofang thanked the people of Makeni for the overwhelming welcome accorded him and assured them of China’s support, especially in the area of infrastructural development.

He revealed that it is a great pleasure for him to visit Makeni city, the home town of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, noting that the relationship between China and Sierra Leone started in 1971 during the tenure of the late President Saika Stevens highlighting that the affiliation has resulted to Sierra Leone benefiting from China especially in the area of infrastructural developments like the Youyi Building, National Stadium, bridges, schools and hospitals, all of which have been of immense benefit to the people and promised to link Makeni City Council with a city in China.

The Chinese envoy went on to reiterate that his government has future plans to help the people of Sierra Leone not only in the area of infrastructural development but capacity building to enable Sierra Leoneans effectively participate in national development reiterating, “long live China/Sierra Leone friendship.”

On behalf of the people of Makeni, Mayor Moses Sesay lauded Ambassador Qiu Shaofang and entourage for the love demonstrated to visit the city and make the donation to ease some of their constraints describing the gesture as timely and assured that the gifts would be utilized for their intended purpose.

Mayor Moses Sesay also revealed that the population of Makeni City is over 100,000 (one hundred thousand) and that it is located between two hills, Mena and Wusum.

On behalf of the APC Government, Resident Minister North, Alie Kamara welcomed Ambassador Qiu Shaofang reiterating that the donation would be judiciously used for its intended purpose articulating that the gifts are a clear indication that development is not only restricted to Freetown.

Similar statements were reechoed by Hon. Paramount Chief Kassangha 11 of Bombali Shebora Chiefdom who earlier welcomed the Chinese Ambassador and delegation on behalf his colleague Paramount Chiefs in Bombali District. Singing and dancing in praise of the Chinese government climaxed the ceremony.
