IPAM female wing launched
With the rapid misconceptions surrounding the treatment of Muslim women from some Muslims who may justify their oppression and mistreatment of women on the basis of Islam and also from some non- Muslims who have an agenda to take the Islamic teachings and want to depict Islamic civilization as backward and oppressive, the Institute of Public Administration and Management University of Sierra Leone Muslim Ja’maat on Sunday 22nd June, 2014 launched their female wing at the Institute campus Tower Hill.
Launching the group, the Director of Academic Carrier, Advisory Counseling Services and Lecturer of the Department of Language Studies University of Sierra Leone Dr. Fatu Taqi reiterated that being a Muslim woman does not mean you are only allowed to receive an education and work but should be given and will be given opportunities to excel in their areas of expertise. She stressed that the need to acquire knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim whether male or female and the State is obligated to provide women an education to the highest level.
Dr. Taqi said women must be seen as valuable citizens of the state who not only offer their knowledge but also educate, nurture and instill Islamic Knowledge on personalities of the next generation. She emphasized that in every way the Muslim woman contributes to and has a vital and honorable role to play in society.
Dr. Taqi urged the women to make all effort to read the Holy Quran and not to rely on their Imams only to give them the translation of the Quran since we now have both translation and transliteration but hasten to advice them to ask the knowledgeable people if they have any doubts. She opined that being a practicing Muslim should not only be limited to the month of Ramadan as that is the time the pubs, bars and entertainment centers go out of business.
Dr. Taqi stressed on individual responsibility and encouraged them to be a role model as they need to act and behave as Muslim women. She urged them to make the female wing sustainable by encouraging other sisters to join them in promoting Islamic ethos in the university and ended her statement by praying that one day the country will have a Muslim woman as President.
In her handing over statement outgoing Chairlady Fatmata Turay catalogued all the successes achieved in bringing the group together and assured the audience that with the enthusiasm of the female students the IPAM Female wing is bound to succeed.
Madam Turay noted that the notion that Muslim women cannot be educated or work is an absurd one. She said a basic understanding of the life of Muhammad (SAW) and knowledge of the wives of the Prophet (SAW) show examples of women excelling in their fields of knowledge. She recognized all those who are in her executive by giving them certificates and introduced the new chairlady Madam Ejatu Jalloh.
In another development, at the handing over ceremony of the IPAM Muslim Ja’maat, the outgoing President Mr. Osman Ibrahim Bangura urged the Incoming executive led by Cecil Campbell as President to ensure that the Jamaat move from strength to strength. He called on all to work for the promotion of Islamic ethos in the university and always be united in encouraging other students to join the Muslim Jamaat.
