Momoh Konte wages war against Ebola
Entrepreneur, philanthropist, economist, international businessman and lecturer, Mr. Momoh K. Konte has been in the front-line of war against the deadly Ebola disease ravaging our country.
Konte stated that he came to his home town Kabala to launch this campaign which he believes, will be able to put a stop to this deadly disease before it gets out of hand, if all Sierra Leoneans collectively play a significant role in the fight against this epidemic,
Momoh Konte stressed his disappointment in the Mano River Union’s lack of proactive stance in the fight against this deadly disease that started in neighbouring Guinea and Liberia. “Here we are today; it’s killing people in our country and it has taken over the whole of the MRU countries. The MRU should have issued a strong press statement emphasizing the need for us to fight collectively. No country should have been left to fight the disease alone.
Momoh Konte likened our reaction to the Ebola epidemic to the civil war in the early 90s. When the war started people were reluctant to believe it was real, and it was not until it reached Freetown that people finally believed that the war was real. Many citizens have their heads stuck in the sand and still do not believe the Ebola disease exists. Even after scores of people have been killed, while others are still fighting for their lives; some section of the country is in denial. It is for this reason that Momoh Konte found it necessary to go to his home town and its environs to create awareness and advise people to take the necessary precautions.
Konte said he cannot stress enough the importance that citizens do more to ensure the word on this deadly disease is spread. He said people should go to their villages, towns, environments etc., and pass on the necessary advice and sensitization.
Momoh Konte was very grateful to all the chiefs, Honorable Members of Parliament, Councillors, and stakeholders for their swift response to a special but very important call at very short notice. He said, “Let us put aside politics and fight as a nation to eliminate this deadly disease, Ebola. We should stop the blame game and finger pointing; our people are dying from this ungodly Ebola disease. This is the time we should all show patriotism and work as a nation. This is not the time for politics.”
For a start, Mr. Konte donated 10 drums of chlorine, hand gloves, Le10 million, and promised that his company, Transtech International Sierra Leone Ltd, will offer a further Le10 million a month for a period of one year as this fight is going to be a long one .
Although Momoh Konte led the fight against the Ebola epidemic in his home town of Kabala, he was not the only one that made donations to attack and defeat the disease. Ministers, deputy minister, Honorable Members of Parliament, Chiefs, Chairmen and women from his home district also made contributions.
At the gathering, Koinadugu District All Peoples Congress (APC) party Chairman, Dr. Samura said this is not the responsibility of just the Ministry of Health and Sanitation; it is the responsibility of each and every Sierra Leonean. We all have a role to play and we should form a task force against Ebola not only in Koinadugu District but all over Sierra Leone as a country.
Hon. Daniel Koroma of Constituency 46 in the Koinadugu district, who spoke on behalf of the MPs from the district stated, “To my mothers and fathers of this great district, I want you all to join me in rendering our sincere thanks and appreciation to a son of the soil, Momoh Konte, for this proactive intervention. We are not going to wait till it gets here; we will take the fight to it. To our chiefs, I am expecting much from you, to take the leadership role to fight against this disease called Ebola.”
The meeting, held at the Kabala Community Centre over the weekend was well attended by thousands of people. The meeting was a success story that every one of us as citizens of Sierra Leone should emulate. What a proactive move from the people of Koinadugu District in general, and Momoh Konte in particular.
Minister of Tourism, Peter Bayuku Konteh, showered praises on Momoh Konte for taking this proactive measure and sharing his ideas on how to combat Ebola before it confronts all of us.
Mr. Momoh Konte has taken the lead on many occasions to come to the aid of his fellow Koinaduguans. His selfless services in the field of education to the people of Koinadugu by building and equipping three schools and the establishment of scholarship funds, the provision of a bus for the Kabala Drivers’ Union, and the rehabilitation of the Kabala Central Mosque, to name but a few of his good works.
