To Advocate for Child Prisoners ARTSL commission ‘Salone finest’ studio
It has been disclosed to this media house that Art Resourceful Tourism Sierra Leone on Tuesday May 27 this year formally commissioned their newly built studio at their head office in Freetown.
During the opening event, the new studio that was pronounced as SALONE FINEST was jointly opened by the Juvenile Education Survival Program (JESP) and its development partners in the country.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr. Sheka B.A Mansaray Jr. revealed one of the objectives of the studio is to help advocate on behalf of juveniles in the Sierra Leonean prisons.
He disclosed that it was reported to their group that the juveniles in the Sierra Leonean prisons are badly treated and that he is calling on higher authorities to closely watch the affairs of these children in custody.
“We cater for three sets of child prisoners”, he revealed. Adding, with a fund of $135 000 that has been catered for, the Mayor of Reading City in the United Kingdom on his last visit to Sierra Leone assures that his country will support the Juvenile Education Survival Program (JESP) in Sierra Leone.
The Director in charge of Operations in the Prisons department, Mr. Mustapha Conteh assures that government of Sierra Leone has put in place a system that will improve the care on prisoners in the country.
He disclosed that a number of 4,386 children are currently in custody at the prison department in Sierra Leone.
He calls on the government of President Koroma to closely look into cases of juvenile justice and help defend child prisoners; adding that these children might come out of their prison cells and become better players in the development of the country in the future.
