Gruesome road accident claims two lives

The first security escort vehicle of the Minister of Defence, Hon. Alfred Paolo Conteh was on Sunday 11th May 2014 involved in a gruesome road accident on their return journey after the funeral ceremony of the late Hon William Juana Smith in Kenema.

From available sources, the accident occurred at Mathoi approximately eleven miles from Mile 91, where the security vehicle lost control and somersaulted twice before landing of the highway. The accident resulted in the death two of the security personnel, namely,  Corporal Oseh and Sergeant Peter  while four others are in critical condition at the Emergency Hospital in Freetown.

Although the cause of the accident is being investigated, information so far gathered by SEM say the minister while on his way to Kenema on Saturday spent much of his time at Tokeh.

They left late Saturday and arrived in Kenema early Sunday morning to attend the Church service of late Hon W. J. Smith which ended after 3 p.m. and was buried by 4 p. m.

The driver and personnel had no time to rest and again left Kenema for Freetown late. The lack of rest leading to tiredness and fatigue may not be unconnected with the accident.

This is a food for taught as drivers in our society have no voice and cannot dictate or postponed a planned journey by their bosses even if they are tired.
