Assessing line Ministries for smooth implementation of the ‘Agenda for Prosperity’
Citizens in democratic countries invariably insist that extensive information be provided on the operations of government to build a true citizen—oriented participatory government to open the process of communications by eliminating boundaries between government departments and the people by wide ranging public deliberations, discussions and debates.
President Ernest Bai Koroma’s government has demonstrated commitment to alleviate poverty and promote good governance by allocating substantial resources to the ‘Agenda for Prosperity’ to main Ministries such as: The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, the Ministry of Energy, The Ministry Water Resources and the Ministry of Works, Housing and Infrastructure to make sure the said agenda works.
Looking at the ‘Agenda for Prosperity’ the President has tried immensely in providing the framework to ensure that each of these Ministries works effectively to ensure that Sierra Leoneans lives change through the implementation of the agenda.
Let’s look at the role of the Health and Sanitation Ministry
The need to address the proliferation of Quack and Unqualified health professionals which has been underscored as a contribution ‘to the Mortality’ Rate and the monitoring of the Free Health Care initiative by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) thus increasing the availability of the drugs across the country.
Agriculture Ministry
This sector had been prioritized by government recently and the ministry is one of the donor recipients in the recent times and it is also the highest employer and expected to significantly contribute to the government’s development through the provided tractors to farmers across the country sometimes in 2010. Recently the Agriculture Ministry has also established a department called the Agricultural Business Centers (ABC) to commercialize Agriculture.
Education
The issue of fake results had been tackled while the issue of unregistered schools also addressed professionally by the Education Ministry.
According to the Minister of Education, Science and Technology Dr. Minkailu Bah students who do not pass public examinations are not allowed to go to another level. All these actions are embedded in the ‘Agenda for Prosperity’
Electricity
Government effort to improve electricity is laudable, although thermal generation of power is considered expensive.
Rural and Infrastructure
Government had scored high ranks in road construction especially in the city and also more attention is now been paid to the Provinces, this needs no explanation as it is vividly seen the ‘Agenda for Prosperity’ is still in progress.
