Green Scenery/SLAJ schools journalists in Kenema

Green Scenery in collaboration of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has organized a two days training for practicing journalists from the South and the Eastern region of the Republic of Sierra Leone at the Chinese Farm Complex, Wahann Abu road Kenema in the Eastern part of the country on capacity building for practicing journalists on emerging large scale land issues in Sierra Leone.

In his welcome address the chairman of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) east Bob Batilo Saffa welcome all participants and facilitators, adding that since after the banner conference this is first program organize by SLAJ and other body in the eastern part of the country.

 The chairman of the occasion said the occasion is a special one as it is the first time journalists in the country are participating on issues of land.

Sayoh Kamara said that the main responsibility of the media is to raise awareness, educate, inform and entertain the public but has not been of independent in exhibiting their services, adding that journalists are to serve as element of change to the community on the issues of land grabbing in the country.

Delivery his statement the Executive director of Green scenery said that his organization started in a small scale but just has now become a national Non-Governmental Organization that participant in all land issues in the country, he said that they have been championing large scale land issues more especially land grabbing  issue.

Joseph Rahall reiterated that his organization has be given support journalists who have be reporting on land grabbing issues but find out that most of the reporting have not been properly reported which give the urge to sick out for fund so that they in partnership with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) will train journalists to specialize in reporting issues of land grabbing.

The national vice president of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Stanley Bangura Jr. in his presentation said that as an organization they are happy for going into partnership with Green Scenery of bringing journalist together for a training which before this time in their campaign massage that they will providing training facilities for their membership after taken up office in the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ).

He said that the selection of participants for the training is not of surprise but identified journalists base on their interest area in their reporting and therefore said that after the training there will be qualified journalists who will report adequately on land grabbing issues, adding that journalists can only now be called to training workshop base on their interest areas, noting that lot journalists have undergo training with no impact.

Stanley Bangura Jr. reiterated that the role of the media is increasing very day looking at the improvement of the country and therefore called on the participants to attend all session of the training as every session is important. Adding that the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) is working to see that 1965 public order act is revisit and they also working with UNDP to roll over the work of the journalist.
