Yazbeck petitioned in London

Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom today received a petition on behalf of Galaxy Radio Sierra Leone against popular Lebanese businessman Yazbeck.

His Excellency Edward Mohamed Turay was handed in a petition by the leader of the London-based Galaxy Group, Abu Rattata at the conference room of the High Commission, in which they catalogued their grievances against the Lebanese businessman whom they accused of trying to seize the building that houses Galaxy Radio based in Lungi in Freetown.

Rattata said that Galaxy Radio is an African project which also operates in Lungi and Lunsar as well as in London and other African countries.

He called on government to intervene in the matter which is already in a Freetown court.

“This is a project that is benefitting a lot of Sierra Leoneans because apart from the community radio, we are also providing tertiary education and offering scholarships for people in those communities.”

“We want to stand shoulder to shoulder with our Sierra Leonean brothers and sisters to ensure that foreigners do not come into our land and grab our properties,” Rattata said.

He called on the High Commissioner to use his good offices to channel their petition to the appropriate authorities because in his words, “if Galaxy fails in Sierra Leone it will definitely fail in Africa.”

Managing Director of Galaxy Radio Sierra Leone Ibrahim S. Kamara, explained that since the seizure of the building by the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) following the report and recommendation of the Beckles Davies Commission of Enquiry, they have been occupying the premises since 2006 with the National Assets Commission serving as landlords.

“We have been paying every single cent for that building after having completed massive refurbishment of the premises,” Kamara said.

High Commissioner assured his guests mainly british national of Caribbean roots, of his mission’s fullest support to their cause.

“You are providing valuable services to the people of Sierra Leone and therefore we’ll give you the support that will encourage you to do more for our people,” he said.

HE Turay said as representative of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, he will ensure that justice is done in the interest of all and called on his guests to exercise some amount of patient.

Galaxy has been one of Sierra Leone’s most outstanding radio stations broadcasting from the Lungi environs.
