Sierra Leone Parliamentary Women’s Caucus president says more should be done for women and girls

President of the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus, Hon. Patricia Brown has said that more needs to be done to achieve the MDGs for women and girls.

Hon. Brown of Constituency 37, Magbema Chiefdom, Kambia District was among hundreds of delegates attending the UN Conference on the status of women, recently concluded in New York. Based on its theme – “Challenges and Achievements in Implementing MDGs for Women and Girls,” the conference drew attention to the need for their training in science and technology, access to education as well as full employment and decent work.

While expressing grave concern over violations of women’s sexual rights, Hon. Brown noted the importance of protecting women’s access to sexual and reproductive health rights. As Caucus President, she says their role as women MPs is an important channel for advocacy for school girls.  Furthermore, having supported girls’ education at Kolenten in Kambia, the MP hopes to facilitate the STEM concept of science, technology, engineering and math through the distribution of science texts  for girls in northern Sierra Leone.

Delegates from more than 100 countries, including NGOs, CSOs and the Ministry of Social welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs from Sierra Leone, attended the UN conference, hosted by UN Women and ECOSOC.
