ACC interacts with RSLAF in Makeni

The Northern Regional Office of the Anti-Corruption Commission has engaged officers of the 4th Infantry Brigade and 4th Battalion of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) at Teko Barracks in Makeni, to solicit their support in the fight against corruption and also encourage them to desist from corruption and corrupt practices in the discharge of their duties.

Speaking at the sensitization meeting on Thursday 20th March 2014, ACC’s Regional Manager North, Mr. Patrick Sandi underscored the importance of RSLAF in the development of Sierra Leone and explained how corrupt practices within and outside the institution can hinder that endeavor. He reminded the military personnel of their responsibilities as Sierra Leoneans to support the ACC and explained their role in the fight.  “ACC exists to make sure that things are done the right way in this country. Let’s fight to make sure our children and those yet unborn realize the benefits of a corrupt free nation” he stressed.

Manager Sandi furthered that, the engagement was part of ACC’s public education approach in fighting corruption. He told the military officers present that Anti-Corruption Commission alone cannot fight corruption in the country and called on RSLAF to partner with her. He said rampant and endemic corruption is a recipe for conflict and when there is unrest the military will have the onus to quell it. Therefore, all hands must be put on deck to avert conflict by successfully destroying corruption.

The Regional Manager emphasized the Commission’s determination for partnership with RSLAF towards the fight against corruption and used the occasion to express appreciation to the Brigade and Battalion Commanders and team for making the meeting a huge success. He spoke on the importance of asset declaration and encouraged them to declare their assets and liabilities as it was a statutory requirement.

ACC’s Senior Public Education Officer, Al-Hassan Sesay emphasized the importance of regular engagements with the military to remind them of their roles and responsibilities towards the fight against corruption. He reminded them of their civic responsibility to report any acts of corruption to the Commission. Mr. Sesay encouraged them to be sincere in the fight and stand firm against corruption. He entreated them to always resist, reject and report corrupt practices.

Question and answer session formed part of the meeting.
