Maada Bio to attend late President Kabbah’s funeral

The Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio (in photo) has confirmed that he will be travelling to Freetown to honour the late President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah who will be laid to rest on Sunday, 23rd March 2014.

Speaking to me on his decision to travel to Freetown for the funeral, the Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio said “The late President Kabbah will always be remembered as one of our greatest leaders of our generation. Therefore, we should all do what we can to give him the most befitting funeral as a true statesman. This is why I have decided to put on hold all my international engagements in London to pay my respect to a man who was a great public servant”

The Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio has been in London since January pursuing some academic work and engaging in various diplomatic efforts. According to the Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio, he has been planning to travel to Sierra Leone in April, but had to immediately change his travel plans following the sad loss of President Kabbah.

Also, speaking to me, the Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio appealed to all Sierra Leoneans to continue to mourn the late President Kabbah because he left for the nation a legacy which we must all be proud of.

It is expected that the Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio will arrive at the Lungi International Airport on Friday, 21st 2014. From the airport, the Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio will then be driven to the headquarters of the Sierra Leone People’s Party where he will sign a book of condolence for the late President Kabbah and have a detailed briefing on the funeral arrangements.

Earlier this week, the Rtd. Brig Julius Maada Bio also released a tribute on the passing away of the late President in which he described him as “an emblem of peace and an icon of democracy”. In his emotional tribute in which he narrated some of his encounters with the late President Kabbah, the Rtd Brig. Julius Maada Bio also wrote on the legacy of the late President “For any family to lose a loved one is a great personal tragedy; but to lose a man whose dedication and commitment to the service of his nation has become the emblem of our country’s transition from war to peace, such loss is a national tragedy. The outpouring of grief and condolence messages at home and abroad have brought out his most enduring legacy – ending the war and establishing the building blocks of our country’s post-conflict recovery.”

Also, following the death of President Kabbah, the Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio has personally spoken to Mrs. Isata J. Kabbah in a telephone conversation in which he has expressed his profound condolence to her on the passing away of her husband.

It could be recalled that the late President Kabbah was the immediate successor to the Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio. The President Kabbah passed away on Thursday 13th March 2014 at his private residence at Kabaya Lodge, Juba Hill in Freetown.  He died at the age of 82.
