Re – ‘Ban on right hand-drive vehicles effective 1st Sept. 2014’

With reference to the Public Relations Officer of the Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority (SLRTA), Abdul Karim Dumbuya, in promoting his so called accident-free Sierra Leone with special focuses on ban on right hand-drive vehicles, In my view, Abdul Karim Dumbuya should have kept himself busy repairing pot holes in the entire road network in the country rather than trying to create a bad legacy for himself.

Abdul Karim Dumbuya reminded drivers and vehicle owners that with effect from 1st September, 2014. “No right- hand drive vehicle would be allowed to ply the streets of the entire country when the one-year grace period would have ended”. It is sad and embarrassing to the country that Abdul Karim Dumbuya is taking this unpopular decision. Why did the Government of Sierra Leone in the first place accept duty of about £1,500  on each vehicle; are the duties paid on these vehicles going to be refunded by Abdul Karim Dumbuya?  We need answers before 1st of September, 2014.

He also stated,  that “ right-hand drive vehicles are responsible for between 70% to 80% of road crashes in the country leading to earlier deaths, increased disabilities and orphans that have socio-economic impact on the development of the country adding, “road safety should be everybody’s concern as each life lost is a loss to the nation.” Can Abdul Karim Dumbuya come up with evidence of these statistics that right – hand vehicles are responsible for road accidents?

My candid advice to Abdul Karim Dumbuya to keep himself busy and create job opportunities for young people, by urgently fixing the entire country road network that is littered with pot holes, and by doing this would minimise accidents.

  • what a country

  • I cannot agree with you more, there is no proof that right hand drive causes accident in the country. I live in the uk and drive a left hand drive car which I have being driving for more than seven years and I have never ever crashed it or hit and hazardous object. I think African politicians can easily manipulate people, impose rules which had little effect on their lives but major impacts on the ordinary people’s lives. will they provide food on the table for all those people who own right hand drive cars. stop selling driving licenses to people who cannot drive, carry proper mot checks on cars before they are licenced and carryout checks on drivers who are often drunk or are mentally or physically unfit to drive and stop blaming right hand drives for your failures to govern the country. a professional driver can safely drive any car without hindering people’s lives.
