ABC Secretariat makes in roads
The Attitudinal and Behavioral Change Secretariat (ABC) under directorship Dr. Ivan Agibola Thomas has been scoring impressive and worth rating goals as they strive to fulfill President Koroma’s goal: “Agenda for Change.” (Photo: Nanette Thomas, ABC Secretariat National Coordinator, in discussion with Traffic Police Officers/ Transport Stakeholders)
This was realized Monday 4th during a meeting with Traffic Police Officers/Transport Stakeholders held at Police Headquarters on George Street in Freetown.
The meeting attracted personalities from the Sierra Leone Police, the ABC Secretariat, Road Transport Cooperation, Driver’s Union and Bike Rider’s Union etc.
The get together was meant to map out solutions to the country’s troubled transport sector.
In his statement, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Francis Munu said the transport sector which should be the life-blood of a country’s economic growth is apparently in a terrible situation and needs serious attention.
He said despite the spate of fatal accidents, extortion and lawlessness have been adversely affected in the transport industry.
“It is the fault of all including drivers, riders, vehicle owners, police officers, Traffic wardens, commuters and pedestrians respectively,” I.G Munu said.
He commended officials of the ABC for relentlessly trying to brand Sierra Leone generally.
That it is sure with such a step the country will overcome the bottlenecks, bad attitudes and odd behaviours posing threats to national development.
“Since ABC’s engagement with police officers, a host of traffic offenders have been professionally apprehended and dealt with by law without any compromise as is usually the case,” I.G Munu lamented.
He urged stakeholders present to collaborate with officials of the ABC.
The National Traffic Coordinator, Superintendent Ambrose M. Sovula said ABC’s outreach to particularly the traffic department of the Sierra Leone Police is but a blessing and has caused the reduction of 18 traffic checkpoints (from Bombay Street in Freetown to Waterloo) to at least five, restricting drivers plying ‘half the way’ to passengers destinations and revamping vigilance among traffic police officers.
He complained that most traffic offenders are in the habit of exploiting the names and status of key personalities to avoid police arrest and punishment.
The Director of SLRTC, Mr. Yansaneh said his institution uncompromisingly frowns at the increase in the rate of road accidents and assured all that they are putting measures in place to reverse the current trend.
He said the SLRTC will soon be conducting training courses on road safety, use of reflective stripes and detailing traffic wardens to various regional traffic divisions.
National Coordinator ABC Secretariat, Nanette Thomas, in her avowals, commended traffic/transport stakeholders for facilitating the ABC’s inexorable and unstoppable agenda for change as always said by the President.
She noted though that the pursuit to change the attitudes and behaviours of especially stakeholders of society must at all be used to deviate from government’s enshrined rules and regulations.
She respectfully called on road traffic regulators to effect arrests where necessary and without any fair or favour at all.
She said with proper attitudes and behaviours in the transport sector, lives will be saved; transport fare reasonable; and consequently, there will be rapid socio-economic development in the country.
