Fireworks in Bo as police and students clash
Latest reports reaching this press have indicated that on Monday 10th March 2014 some students attending Njala University College (NUC) at Touwama in Bo went on a rampage against lecturers for refusing the students to take their exams.
Reports have it that the lecturers alleged that the students had not paid their fees, whilst on the other hand the students alleged that they had paid their fees and their names had been omitted.
Reports further added that another reason for the strike action was that the students had been deprived electricity to study, and water on campus.
It is understood that severe damage was caused by the striking students and the police at Towama Campus, Bo. When contacted, resident minister southern region, Mutaru Conteh, explained that he was not in Bo at the time but he was informed by AIG south that the police had the situation in Bo under control and that there was no cause for alarm.
Several students contacted by this press explained that the police in Bo fired live bullets and tear gas canisters to disperse the striking students, adding that dozens of students had sustained injuries and were later rushed to the Bo Government Hospital for treatment. MP for Bo, Hon Francis Kponowa was said to be doing his level best to pacify the striking students in Bo.
All students resident on campus were asked to immediately vacate the hostels. According to confirmed sources what sparked violence at Njala University Bo Campus was a result of students not allowed to take their first semester exams.
Sources close to the campus stated that after government had made efforts in subsidizing this year’s fees, the administration is still bent on fixing their rates even though the government has come halfway to ease the problem.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Education Science and Technology made an intervention that skyrocketed fees in all government sponsored universities and colleges be brought down but some administrations like Njala Bo Campus turned out to be reluctant in bringing the fees down. The government intervened to ensure that the burden was less on parents and guardians by subsidizing for five years, however, according to the students this was not reflected as stated by the government.
The students stressed that NUC administration is presenting different fees to what the government proposed.
Who is to believe? And who is right?
Papa government intervene as Bo Campus is in a chaotic situation.
