Police wage war on commercial bike riders in Kenema

Reports reaching this press indicate that Traffic Police Officers attached to the Kenema Divisional Headquarters, have on Monday, March 3, launched massive raids on commercial motor bikes plying the streets of Kenema without crash helmets, driving without license, driving unregistered and unlicensed motor bikes,  driving with no covers by third party insurance policies and carrying more than one person.

This was made known by the Divisional Traffic Officer, Inspector Sidie Turay at his office in Kenema over the weekend.

In an interview with this paper, he stated that they have the cooperation of the Judiciary who try the offenders and met out punitive actions against them.

He also stated that the operation has also been highly acclaimed by the people of Kenema.

According to him, the operation is going to last for as long as it takes until the commercial bike riders comply with laid down rules. He underlined that they have been able to achieve a lot in controlling commercial bike riders.

He revealed that the operation was launched by the Acting Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) East, Chief Superintendent of Police, Karrow Kamara and the District Traffic Officer (DTO), Inspector Daniel Turay.

He clarified that before launching the operation all stakeholders were called into a meeting at the office of the Local Unit Commander (LUC), Mr. David Sahid Koroma, who enlightened them about the dangers of plying with bikes without crash helmets for both riders and the passengers.

He noted that it will be interesting to note that the Bike Riders Union supported the idea and asked to be given two weeks to sensitize all the bike riders.

He intimated that the operation has now been replicated in the Kailahun and Kono districts where there is also a lot of lawlessness among the bike riders.

He also stated that they are also presently raiding ghettos and other hot spots for criminals where a lot of suspects have been arrested and charged to Court for various offences.
